How many books have you in your life stopped reading after a few pages and forgotten it on the shelf forever?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But your book shouldn\u2019t be added to the pile of books that we never finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We can\u2019t let that happen. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Apart from the storytelling, there are simple things that our brain likes about a book<\/strong><\/a> – how it looks. And by that I don\u2019t mean the cover, I mean the text.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is called Typesetting. In simpler words, Layout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 tricks to make your book un-put-downable<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 1: Resist the temptation of fonts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your typeface and the font are unarguably the most important element of typesetting. Font can do wonders to your book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Starting from evoking the mood to setting the time period…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, Serif type gives a glimpse back to classic styling, craftsmanship and tradition, whereas sans serif type conveys modernism and simplicity. (\u2018Serif\u2019 refers to small decorative flourishes at the ends of the letter strokes.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While choosing a font, don\u2019t go experimenting. Go for the classic ones, they are classic for a reason. Some font styles are naturally easier to read for our eyes.. like the example below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your font can also be used to build your identity. Most authors usually stick to one font style throughout all their books. The more familiar your audience is with the font you choose, the more likely they are to trust you and the message that you\u2019re trying to convey. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, check out the font in all the Harry Potter books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deviate too far from the norm and you risk alienating your audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2: It\u2019s all about those margins<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Margins work like a highlighter, it should feel like words are coming out of the book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Margins help create a book block, whether you want to keep it really small or full packed, don\u2019t forget the binding. Leave enough for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your reader should be able to hold the book and see the text clearly without any distraction. The entire type block area should give a feeling of openness, making the book inviting to read\u2026as some like to call the \u201cnegative space\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So, use that blank space…(by not using it).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3: Don\u2019t leave bread crumbs, nobody will follow<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at the ending of this page\u2026 This is a Widow..a paragraph started in the last line\u2026(see image below) <\/p>\n\n\n\n

These tiny details can put off your reader and make them leave your book, however interesting the plot might be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, the opposite also happens, the orphan… The first line of a paragraph shouldn\u2019t fall on the last line of a page, and the last line of a paragraph should not go over to the top of the next page. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Widowed and orphaned lines make the reader pause, thus impeding reading comprehension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4: Be cautious with art and images<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If your book has illustrations<\/strong><\/a> and art, the page layout must be designed to give enough room for the art to do its magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Positioning of the images is an important  step in laying the foundation for the genre of the book…<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re writing a book for our little friends, the very small amount of text per page will go right on top of the art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to school textbooks, they have a bad reputation. They are no fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don\u2019t forget – <\/strong>Typesetting is a design trick that few people notice unless it\u2019s done poorly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ambiguity in text impacts reading speed and understanding.. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have a look\u2026 The C\u2019s and O\u2019s look alike,, you don\u2019t want your reader to lose their \u201coool\u201d                   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or feel, \u201ccod\u201d. Why cod? <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Letter spacing improves readability by providing greater separation and clarity between adjacent characters and words. When letters or words appear very close to each other, there is more room for confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resist the temptation to cram as many elements as possible onto a single page \u2014 it won\u2019t look dynamic, it\u2019ll just look busy. Remember that white space is your friend.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
